A couple years ago, when I started shooting weddings, I came across Melissa Jill’s blog and I loved everything about it. From her photographs, to her writing style, to the sheer volume of information that she freely shares with other photographers.
It quickly became a goal of mine to attend one of her MJ 2-Day workshops that she hosts in her home in Arizona every winter. Of course, that was before she decided to come to me. :) At least that is how it felt when she announced this past winter that she would be hosting her workshop in Boulder in July. Yippee!
At the time, I was up visiting my brother and his family in Montana so the first thing I did was call my husband, JB, and convince him that I simply have no choice but to attend this workshop and that he must try to avoid traveling for work (no easy task as he travels about 70% of the time).
And, oh happy day! it all worked out.
As an added bonus, I was able to convince my friend Kelli, who I met the previous fall at a PPA workshop, to come stay at my house and attend the workshop as well. I loved being able to talk to her before and after each day about all the great stuff that Melissa was divulging. Plus she is just one of the friendliest and most easy-going people to be around. We all need more of those people in our lives. :)
During the mock engagement shoot on the first day, Melissa shows us how she sets the couple at ease.
Photographers in action…
The next day, after a lunch break on the front porch, someone asked about shooting a ceremony when the sun is at its harshest so Melissa quickly set up a faux ceremony to demonstrate. Don’t Becca and Katie make a lovely couple? :)
Towards the end of the day, we had some time to take each other’s photo. On the left is extrovert extroardinaire Katie D from Denver and on the right is sultry-looking Claire from Houston…
This workshop was everything I needed and more. Melissa Jill is as wonderful in person as she sounds on her blog. Thank you MJ for coming to Colorado! I learned so many new photography techniques – some that I’ve already started using (I’m looking at you, back-button focus!) and some that I’ll be trying out soon. But more importantly to me, I’ve been given some fantastic business advice that I’ll be doing my best to implement from now on.
A side effect to attending workshops that I treasure are the friendships and connections I get to make with the other attendees. Along with the fabulous women I’ve already mentioned are those I didn’t get a chance to photograph – Cathleen, Katie B, Amy, Susan, Brittani, Megan, and Jessica. You are all such wonderful and supportive women and I’m so happy to be sharing this photography journey with you. :)
I also want to specifically thank Kirsten for hosting at her Dad’s fabulous house and convincing MJ to come to Colorado (let’s meet up soon!). And also a big thank you to Sara, Melissa’s lovely assistant, for all the work you do behind the scenes.
